The Yin-Yan Dress

The Yin-Yan Dress

Black-and-white checked fabric is everywhere in Bali, most often with golden yellow accents. It’s draped around statues, used in ritual ceremonies, wrapped around the temples that grace every house and shop, and made into umbrellas. It’s called “poleng” and has a spiritual meaning like Yin and Yang: There is no day without night, no joy without sorrow, no good without bad. I designed this dress hoping it would please my granddaughter who was born into a beautiful culture I’ve come to appreciate. When she put it on, she didn’t want to take it off.

The Yin-Yan Dress elicits the most oohs and aahs. Perhaps that’s because it’s the most unusual and distinctive. The pleated skirt is trimmed with three bands of contrasting fabric and five tassels in the front. We take extra care to match up the checks. Wide adjustable straps button to the front of the fully-lined bodice. The smaller size dresses are made from gingham with smaller checks.
